KY NSF EPSCoR Education, Outreach, and Communication awards provide funding for individuals and organizations across the commonwealth seeking to engage students and citizens in Advanced Manufacturing STEM topics. Berea College, a private liberal arts college about an hour south of Lexington, is using these awards to support VR curriculum for as part of their Yahng Discovery Center located in the new Margaret A. Cargill Natural Sciences and Health Building.
According to Berea’s website, The Yahng Discovery Center (YDC) is a vehicle for promoting high-quality science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and health (STEM-H) education, teaching, and outreach for all students, regardless of their identity, in grades K-16 as well as the community, at large. The YDC acts as a conduit between Berea College and the surrounding K-12 school districts, teachers, parents, and community members. They provide several STEM-H resources to Berea College students and the greater Berea area as an extension of the Berea College STEM-H faculty, staff, and students.
This EOC award, obtained by education studies Professor Jon Saderholm will provide curriculum for the classroom set of VR goggles Berea purchased with an earlier philanthropic award. Saderholm “plans to use the goggles both “in-reach” efforts supporting our students and also in outreach efforts with local K-12 students.”
